Visit Perpignan and discover Catalan culture
Stroll through the historic centre, where you can admire Le Castillet, a "little castle" of red brick from the 14th century, which by its architectural originality has become the emblem of the Catalan city. Not far from there you will discover other buildings, often in the Gothic or even flamboyant Gothic style: the Lodge of the Sea and the Town Hall, or the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist which contains a wooden sculpture of Christ on the Cross, a major work of European religious art, the centrepiece of the Sanch procession. On the outskirts of the city stands the Palace of the Kings of Mallorca, an impressive Gothic-style fortress-palace with a strong Hispano-Moorish influence.
A good way to discover the main historical monuments of the city is to board the little tourist train. The starting point of the tour is Victory Square.
City of art and culture, Perpignan welcomes every year, among other festivals, " Visa pour l'image ". An unmissable international event for photojournalism enthusiasts in September.
Perpignan also means strolling through the winding streets, tasting Catalan specialities and southern products on the markets, tasting a local wine on a sunny terrace... And for sports lovers, you are lucky because Perpignan is a rugby ground.
