Le charme authentique du Vieux Village
The Ma Prairie campsite is a 10-minute walk from the center of the village of Canet en Roussillon. Stroll through the winding streets of the old village to see the remains of the fortifications and the Vicomtal Castle, perched on a hillside from where the sea could be watched. Just like the pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela who stopped here, don't miss the 14th-century Saint-Jacques church with its bell tower proudly built in "Cairou," the local red brick.
The Canet-en-Roussillon Pond and the Fishermen's Village
Just a stone's throw from the campground, a haven of untamed nature awaits you: the Canet-Saint-Nazaire Lagoon. This magnificent site is home to exceptional flora and fauna across nearly 600 hectares of lagoon. Designated a Natura 2000 site (a European designation aimed at protecting the biodiversity of natural areas), it’s a paradise for birdwatchers.
The lake is a favorite wintering ground for nearly 230 species of birds, including many migratory species such as the famous greater flamingo and the wood sandpiper. With a little luck, you might even spot a kingfisher, a year-round resident of the site!
Several well-maintained trails let you explore this remarkable natural heritage on foot, and guided tours are regularly organized. Our tip: don’t forget to bring your binoculars to make the most of the observation points! Continue your stroll to the Fishermen’s Village, where the traditional huts have been beautifully renovated. One of them even houses a fascinating permanent exhibition tracing the history of the pond.
