Take a stroll through the historic center, where you can admire Le Castillet, a 14th-century “little castle” made of red brick that, thanks to its architectural originality, has become the emblem of this Catalan city. Not far from there, you’ll discover other buildings, often in the Gothic or even Flamboyant Gothic style: the Loge de la Mer and City Hall, as well as the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist, which houses, among other treasures, a wooden sculpture of Christ on the Cross—a major work of European religious art and the centerpiece of the Sanch procession. On the outskirts of the city stands the Palace of the Kings of Majorca, an impressive Gothic palace-fortress with strong Hispano-Moorish influences.

A great way to explore the city’s main historical monuments is to hop aboard the little tourist train. The tour departs from Place de la Victoire.

Events, Atmosphere, and Cuisine

A city of art and culture, Perpignan hosts “Visa pour l’image” every year, among other festivals. An unmissable international event for photojournalism enthusiasts in September. Throughout the summer, the city center also comes alive with“Jeudis de Perpignan,” a major street festival featuring marching bands, theater, and outdoor music.

Perpignan is also about strolling through winding alleyways, sampling Catalan specialties and southern French products at the markets, and sipping local wine on a sunny terrace… And for sports fans, you’re in luck—Perpignan is a rugby stronghold.
