Visit Perpignan and discover the Catalan culture
Wonder around the historical city center, and you may have the opportunity to admire the “Castillet” or small castle in Catalan, which dates back to the XIV century. Its red bricks and rather original architectural design have become the cities emblem, the symbol of “Perpignan la Catalane”. Not far from there, you’ll discover other historical buildings, often in a gothic style, or rather flamboyant gothic architecture, such as; the Loge de la mer, and l’Hôtel de la ville. Or even the Saint John the Baptist cathedral, which holds a magnificent wooden sculpture of the crucifix of Christ, major work of European religious art. It’s also the centrepiece of the processions of the Sanch, which take place every year on Good Friday. Situated in the city’s periphery, the impressive Palace of the kings of Mallorca is erected with its gothic outlines; the fortress shows strong Hispano-Moresque features.
A good way of discovering the main historical monuments of the city is to get on board of the little touristic train. The tour starts at “la place de la victoire” (at the Castillet)
City of art and of culture, Perpignan welcomes every year in September among other festivals; “visa pour l’image”, an international exposition and not to miss rendezvous for amateurs of photojournalism.
Perpignan is also wandering the narrow meandering streets and tasting the local Catalan products and delicacies from the South of France on the markets, or savor a good glass of wine from the local terroir on a sun-drenched terrace. And for the sports fans among you, Perpignan is Rugby territory!
